Laverne Russell Ek

Laverne Russell Ek

LaVerne Russell “Vern” Ek passed away peacefully at 90 years old. Born on January 24, 1936, in Rhinelander, he was the son of Russell and Hilda (Faleske) Ek.

Vern graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1954, where he proudly played hockey. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and faithfully served his country for four years.

Upon returning home, Vern began a long and dedicated career as a machinist with American Motors Corporation and later Chrysler. He took great pride in his work and remained there from 1959 until his retirement on April 30, 1998.

On June 20, 1959, Vern married the love of his life, MaryLou Salke. Together they built a beautiful life and raised four children, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support.

Vern had a deep love for sports and friendly competition. He was an avid golfer and proudly celebrated achieving a hole-in-one, a memory he cherished greatly. He was also a passionate cribbage player, a bowling champion, and a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers. Whether cheering on his Packers, spending time on the golf course, or enjoying a game with family and friends, Vern’s enthusiasm and sense of humor were always present.

Above all, Vern will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His quick wit, warm heart, and ability to make others laugh will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Vern is survived by his children, Randy, Kathy, and Greg (Liane); grandchildren, Andrew, Anna, and Trevor; and great grandchildren, Mia, Luka, and Clara; and siblings, Kris, Jean, and Judy. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, and his son Paul.

A memorial gathering will be held from 2:00 P.M. until the time of the memorial service at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 17, 2026 at Proko Funeral Home.
