“Oh Dear and a Bottle of Beer, if I hadn’t got married I wouldn’t be here.” Margaret “Maggie” Fonk, a lifelong resident of Kenosha, died Saturday, November 28, 2014, at home with her family at her side. Maggie was born April 29, 1922, to Knute and Ester (Kohlman) Strangberg. She liked to tell stories of being a Girl Scout bugler, performing Reveille and Taps. As a young girl her bugler services were also used at other civic events. Maggie worked at Bell Telephone and Frost Company. She liked to say “she married the boss’s son” when she became a full time mother and homemaker, marrying Thomas Fonk on October 12, 1946, in Kenosha. He preceded her in death on September 12, 1984. Maggie and Tom had four children: James (Patti) Fonk, Patricia (Bob) Wise, Mike (Mary) Fonk, Joe (Denise Derdeyn) Fonk, and two cherished grandchildren Julia and Harrison Fonk. Her special niece Kim Wright always brightened her day. Maggie was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, which was founded by her grandparents in their living room. She was a member of the Swedish American Club (Lady Vikings) and volunteered at Jane Vernon Elementary School pool, Kenosha Memorial Hospital, the Lions Club and Meals on Wheels. An avid birder, she was also one of the founding “Friends” of Hawthorn Hollow. In addition, Maggie was a member of the “21club”, numerous bridge clubs, bowling leagues, and her favorite, golf leagues. She had many memorable afternoons at Spring Valley with her team, the Spring Valley Swingers. Maggie also enjoyed travel, pursuing her artistic talents and a lifetime appreciation of dogs and giraffes. Beside her husband she is also preceded in death by her son, James, and brothers; Charles, Lewis, James, and Eugene Strangberg. The family would like to thank Bethany Wise and Laurie Schleif and the staffs of Hospice Alliance and Brightstar for their caring and thoughtfulness. Visitation will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 8760 37th Avenue, Kenosha, on Thursday December 4th, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park privately. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hawthorn Hollow and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church would be appreciated.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111-60th StreetKenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654-3533Visit Maggie’s Online Memorial Book at:www.prokofuneralhome.com
