Maurice Jackson Wallis

1924 ∼ 2014

Maurice "Jack" Wallis passed away suddenly March 22, 2014, at United Hospital System-Kenosha Campus. He was born on July 9, 1924, in Mitchell, SD, the son of the late Fred James and Alta Ethel (Moorhead) Wallis. Jack graduated from high school in Sioux Falls, SD, in 1942, and then moved to Kenosha. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December 1942 and served as tail gunner on a B-17 Bomber for 28 missions. He was discharged as a staff sergeant in October 1945. While home on leave during his service, he met Shirley A. McPhaul while visiting the local USO. They were married June 29, 1946, and celebrated 67 years of marriage together. He attended University of Wisconsin in Madison for three years, and then began working at Anaconda American Brass Co. on June 30, 1947, as a draftsman. He retired 38 years later as an engineering manager. He had 30 wonderful retirement years. On September 15, 2012, he went on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to see the WWII Memorial. Jack enjoyed going to the Hero's Cafe at Festival Foods every Friday to spend time with other veterans. He was a very talented woodworker - his biggest accomplishment was building his own home in 1952 and has lived there for 62 years. He also loved to travel and taking care of his yard, along with spending time with his great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Shirley; two children, Gary J. Wallis of Racine and Susan M. (Richard) Bolyard of Kenosha; four grandchildren, Clinton (Sherri) Wallis, Joel and Aaron Bolyard, and Nicole (Jason) Laypath; and two great-grandsons, Jason and Hayden Laypath. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, William and Charles; and sister, Grace. A visitation will be held for Jack on Wednesday, March 26th, at the Proko Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 noon. May your memories sustain you in the time of need. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.
