Donald Thomas Bain sr

1924 ∼ 2011

Donald T. “Don” Bain, 86, of Kenosha, passed away on Friday night, August 26, 2011, surrounded by family members in his home. Don was born on December 11, 1924, to Clarence M. and Esther V. (Larsen) Bain. He married Margaret Mary “Peggy” Karnes on August 21, 1948, and together they created the legacy that now succeeds them. Don was a World War II Veteran, having served his country in the U.S. Army with three years active service (1943-1946), followed by three years of reserve service. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Headquarters Company of the Central Pacific Base Command in Hawaii, inducted in July 1943 at Camp Grant in Illinois and honorably discharged from active service at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin on March 13, 1946. His civic life was one of dedicated service as well. As a young man, he was an active member of the Kenosha Jaycees, but since 1961, his contributions to the Kenosha Noon Lions Club have been invaluable. He served in multiple official positions for the Club, including two terms as V.P. and another two terms as President. Over the years he chaired the County Fair Food Stand, the White Cane Sale, Lions Service Day, the Membership Committee, the Christmas party for the Blind and Deaf, and seasonal Photos with Santa. He organized the Noon Lions Deaf Branch Club, and for the Lions District Local he served many times as the Deputy District Governor, Zone Chairman, and Region Chairman. Lions Club BOLD (Blind Outdoor Leisure Development) activities were near and dear to his heart, and for his 27+ years of dedication to that organization as BOLD Chairman, BOLD Board of Directors Member, and District Governor Cabinet Member, he received the Special Service Award twice, the District Governor’s Outstanding Service Award twice, as well as the Easter Seals Volunteer of the Year Award in 1996 and the Lions International President’s Outstanding Lion Award in 2000. Don’s awards are too numerous to mention, but the two of which he was most proud were the Melvin Jones Fellowship, bestowed on him in 1994, and the Birch-Sturm Fellowship, bestowed on him in 2007. Both are the highest forms of recognition that can be given to any member by the Lions Club, regionally and internationally, for undying commitment to Lionism and Community—recognitions that have created an everlasting tribute to the name of “Don Bain”. In business, Don joined his father in the Donald T. Bain Plastering Company in 1946. Don then became a member of the Kenosha Home Builders and the Tri-County Contractors Association, and a business representative for the Plastering and Cement Finishers Local 473. He opened his own real estate office in 1969 and served as President of the Kenosha Board of Realtors in 1977. He was Realtor of the Year in 1978, and continued on after that for some time on the Board of Directors for Kenosha Realtors. In his spiritual life, Don was a long-time member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish where he served as President of the Home and School Association and the Church Council. In recent years he has been a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where he wed his bride in this month of August 63 years ago. Don is survived by his wife, Peggy, and their eight children: Donnalee Bain (Don Mohr), Jeanine (Steven) Wolf, D. Thomas Bain (Cathy Klaus), Michael J. (Lisa) Bain, Patricia (Jay) Johnson, Ralph Bain (Libby Lacey), Maggi Bain, and Kelly Bain (Maureen Cramer); twelve grandchildren: Amy (Kurt) Christiansen, Julie (Jason) Milligan, Chris Bain, Justin Bain, Barton (Alison) Wolf, Nicole Wolf, Ryan (Monica) Wolf, Dylan (Dominique) Bain, Wyatt “Boomer” Bain, Michael Anthony Lynch, Alec Lynch, and Donald Lynch; six great-grandchildren: Emily and Norah Christiansen, Makayla and Brady Milligan, Suzanna and Elizabeth Wolf. Don is further survived by his brother-in-law (John Karnes), his cousin who’s been like a sister to him (Marie Anne Kohlenberger), and seven nieces and nephews who are the children of his late in-laws (Alice and Richard Fanning): Rick (Cheryl) Fanning, Leann Schuster, Larry (Betty) Fanning, Maureen (Mark ) Modory, Erin (late Jerry) Grimmer, Brian Fanning, and Shelly (Brian) Boslau. Don was preceded in death by his parents (Clarence and Esther), his infant brother (Roger), his parents-in-law (Ralph and Margaret Karnes), his grandson (Riley Moyer Bain), and his brother-in-law (Ralph Karnes). The Bain Family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Joseph Paukner, M.D. and his staff: Barb, Hilary, and Kim; the entire Kenosha Hospice Alliance team especially Catherine and Sue; and Right-At-Home. The Bain Family requests that memorial contributions be made in Don Bain’s name to either The Kenosha Hospice Alliance (10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd., Pleasant Prairie, WI 53158), Wisconsin Lions Foundation Pride Campaign Fund-Camp Fund (3834 County Road A, Rosholt, WI 54473), or St. Joseph Catholic Academy (2401-69th Street, Kenosha, WI 53143). I was very sorry to hear of Mr. Bain's passing. I wanted to take this opportunity to express my thanks for the help that Mr. Bain had given me in allowing me to work for him in his construction company during my summer years of college. Without that opportunity I am sure I would not have had the financial ability to attend Drake University. I credit Mr. Bain for the start of the success of my career including 5 years as a Pilot during Vietnam and many years as an International Controller, all of which I owe to the start given to me by Mr. Bain. Thank You Mr. Bain Thomas E. Irving Phoenix AZ

Dear Donnalee and Family,I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Bain, but I have the great privilege to have Donnalee as a friend for over 30 years. Knowing her, he had to have been a wonderful father and family man who cared a great deal about others. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
