Harriet F. Wyllie died after a relatively brief illness on Thursday, March 31 at United Hospital System-Kenosha. She was the widow of Irvin G. Wyllie, the founding Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, who passed away on October 25, 1974. Kay A. Wyllie and Laura S. Wyllie, both of Burke, Virginia, her sister Grace Sheldon of Salem, New York and her daughter-in-law, Chuchanee K. “Tui” Wyllie and son Gordon W. Wyllie of Kenosha survive her. Harriet’s grandchildren, Dr. Tanritai “Tan” Wyllie, MD and Medha “Don” Wyllie also survive her. Harriet enjoyed a rich life. Born in Salem, New York on November 21, 1922 to Ray and Mina Roberts Fairley, she graduated from Westminster College in New Castle, Pennsylvania then taught at Washington Academy in Salem, New York before marrying Irv, in 1945. Harriet worked at Madison Public Library, helping Irv earn his doctorate. She bore her three children in Columbia, Missouri, where Irv taught history at the University of Missouri. In 1957 the family moved to Madison, where Irv served as professor of history. In 1968, with the establishment of Parkside, the family came to Kenosha. After Irvin died, Harriet worked as Director of Volunteers at Kenosha Memorial Hospital for eight years. She was a member of Kenosha’s Women’s Club, a member of the Friends of the Library, and enjoyed bridge, dining, and the symphony with her many friends. Harriet was integral to Tan’s and Don’s upbringing. Harriet loved to travel. She and the family lived in Gothenburg and Lund, Sweden for a year during 1961 and 1962. On that trip, the family visited Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, Amsterdam, London and Scotland. Later in life, Harriet and Irv enjoyed trips to Europe, Mexico and around the USA. When Tui, Gordon and her grandchildren lived in Thailand, she visited them several times. She celebrated her 80th birthday on a wonderful cruise to Alaska with her daughters. Instead of flowers, Harriet prefers that memorial donations go to the Irvin G. Wyllie Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 900 Wood Road, P.O. Box 2000, Kenosha, WI 53141-2000.
