With grace and everlasting beauty, our most precious gift of Luigina Wasilevich passed away surrounded by her loving family on December 29, 2023. Born on May 25,1932 in Kenosha to immigrant parents, the late Frank and Ada (Polentini) Pomponi. Luigina entered school only knowing the Italian language. She attended Kenosha Washington Jr. High where she proudly was a cheer squad member and graduated from Kenosha High School (now Mary D. Bradford High School) class of 1950. Growing up in the Holy Rosary neighborhood, she bonded with many close friends, forming her lifelong ‘club’ friends. Luigina’s first employment was at Paielli’s Bakery, whose owners were cherished close family friends. After high school, she was employed full-time at the 1st National Bank as a bookkeeper. She met Peter Wasilevich at a Columbus Park gathering and married on June 6, 1953, at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii Church. Luigina embraced blending Polish-Russian-Italian family foods, cultures, and traditions. Luigina with her husband devoted much of their life raising 4 children and moved to the far ‘southside’ Lazy Acres neighborhood. Lu was one of the founding members of St. Therese parish and their Christian Mothers Association. Catholic education was important to Lu and to help support her children’s education at St. Joseph High School, she returned into the workforce part time bookkeeping at Phillips Brothers Inc. and eventually returned into banking at the Uptown Brown National Bank, retiring in 1990. Luigina became very involved in helping with her treasured grandchildren, always providing unselfish support, meals, and hugs. In 2004, Lu and Pete permanently moved to the Silver Lake area. After Lu became widowed in 2005, she had opportunities to travel for winters to Florida with her partner in adventure and eldest daughter Linda. She enjoyed bingo and neighborhood pool discussions with friends who were impressed by her classic aging beauty and timeless wit. If you had the pleasure of meeting Lu, you know she took interest and wanted to know about you and your family. She listened with a caring smile, had an extra sparkle of style and sometimes flashy sunglasses. She may have provided more unfiltered opinions than you expected in these last years, but that was her; “gotta love Lu”. Lu also became a competitive and ruthless bocce player at the women’s Alpine Club playing through her 90th year. She treasured these Tuesday gatherings of special ladies with so much laughter and love “Italian style”. Continuing the importance of faith and family reflective of her upbringing, Lu made family gatherings a priority from the beginning. Whether it was Sunday dinners, backyard picnics, Christmases packed in the heated garage, many gatherings in Silver Lake, everyone was welcomed and loved as one large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters, brothers, in-laws and friends. Although such a full life of joy and love was lived so well for so long, Luigina’s unique sunshine has set, and we are left with deep emptiness in our hearts. Salute e Cent’Anni! Left to carry on Lu’s legacy are her children Linda Wasilevich, Peter (Mary) Wasilevich, Anne Wasilevich, Kathy (Jim) Tirabassi, her grandchildren Jill (Aaron) Vitkus, Rebecca Tabbert, Jacob Tabbert, Amy (Adam) Reible, Andrea (Shane) Quella, Mario (Katherine) Tirabassi, her great-grandchildren Katelyn, Madelyn and Matthew Vitkus; Austin and Aiden Reible; Cecilia Tirabassi and Lucca Quella. Lu is further survived by her sister Frances Kollman and her sisters-in-law Gilah Pomponi and Terese Wasilevich along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Along with her parents and husband, Lu was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Pomponi, her niece Angelie Pomponi, and nephews Gile Pomponi, Steve Kollman and Steve Wasilevich; her in-laws Peter and Anna (Banasic) Wasilevich, Max (Rose) Wasilevich, MaryAnn (E.James) McNeil, Dorothy, Michael and John Wasilevich, and Ronald Kollman. Special thanks to Doctor Alby K. Antoo, MD for Luigina’s heartfelt care over the years. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Proko Funeral Home. Dear Pete, I am so sorry for your loss. I clearly recall meeting your Mother when you took her to Hawaii many years ago. She was so proud of you and wanted to tell me a couple of stories about your successes. Her love for you was obvious and enormous. She will always be with you.
