Joanne “Jay” Harriet Byrnes Morand passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the Addison of Pleasant Prairie, WI. She was 94 years old. Joanne was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 16, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Harriet (Pinkerton) Byrnes. Although born in Milwaukee, Joanne lived most of her life in Evanston, Illinois. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School and graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1946. She graduated from Northwestern University in 1950 with a double major in History and English and a minor in Education. She completed her student teaching at New Trier High School but decided not to pursue a career in education. After college, Joanne studied business for a year at Florida State in Tallahassee, Florida. Following that, Joanne spent a summer traveling through Europe on a Eurail Pass and by bicycle. She continued to enjoy travel throughout her life. On June 19, 1954, Joanne married Laurence T. Morand and together they raised their five children in Evanston, IL. Joanne did much to make a happy home life. Meals were prepared from scratch and there was often fresh bread baking in the oven. She was known for the cinnamon rolls that she baked and shared with family and neighbors during the holidays. Joanne was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for the family and herself. She knit sweaters for the immediate and extended family. She also made draperies, slipcovers for furniture and refinished furniture. Her love of sewing evolved into quilting. She spent most of her time later in her life making baby quilts for her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Aside from parenting and household responsibilities, Joanne enjoyed many social and service activities. Joanne was an avid gardener and a member of the Garden Club of Evanston. She served as Treasurer on the adult board for her college sorority at Northwestern, Gamma Phi Beta. She enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league. She played bridge with friends, was a member of the Women’s Club of Evanston, and Girl Scout leader for one of her daughter’s troops. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed reading British history, particularly the War of the Roses. She read the complete works of Shakespeare and enjoyed attending the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada. She returned to her classwork after her children were grown to increase her Spanish speaking skills. Survivors include her children, Kate, Eileen, Laurence (Stacia), Charles (Amber), and Michael (Maie); her grandchildren, Maureen, Maya, Trevor, Sabrina, Sophia, Matthew, Sarah, and Elizabeth; great grandchildren Devin and Dominic; sister-in-law, Laurie Byrnes, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, husband and twin children, Teresa and Cecilia; and siblings; Charles, Donald and John Byrnes. Memorial visitation will take place at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Pleasant Prairie, WI on August 16 at 11:00 am with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 12:00 pm. Interment will be private at All Saints Cemetery in Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude’s, or a charity of your choice.
