Karen Lynn (Schwebs) Sorenson, 80, of Kenosha died Saturday, January 15, 2022, at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Karen, daughter of the late Muriel and Arthur Schwebs, was born December 30th 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. As a toddler she moved with her family to Windsor, Wisconsin where she grew up with brothers Lee and Roger on the family’s Willow Brook Farm. Upon graduation from high school, Karen attended UW-Madison graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She then worked as a visiting nurse in the Madison area. In June, 1964 she married Paul Sorenson. They made their home in Kenosha and had two children, Kristen and Erika (Brad) Behling, before divorcing. Karen worked for 36 years as a nursing instructor at Gateway Technical College fostering hundreds of students through the program, many who still cite her as an inspiration for the work they do. She returned to school at UW-Milwaukee where she received her Master of Science degree in nursing. Karen was a powerhouse in and outside of the classroom, volunteering over the years with many organizations. She was the general leader of the Roosevelt Rascals 4H club, volunteered with the Red Cross, tutored Kenosha children in a reading program at Vernon School and raised 15 dogs as a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence. After her retirement, she served as Parish Nurse at First Presbyterian Church in Kenosha where she also previously served as Elder and Deacon, sang in the choir, played with the bell choir, coordinated countless blood drives, and acted as all around shoulder to lean on. She was a strong and independent woman who enjoyed traveling with family and friends and who wasn’t afraid to share her progressive political viewpoints. Most importantly, though, she deeply loved her family who will forever be indebted to her for the tireless support she provided. They all drove each other a littlebit nuts but the fierceness of their love for each other will always abide. Karen was cherished and will be sorely missed by brother Lee (Jill), daughters Kristen and Erika, granddaughters Alyssa and Harper, and by her favorite (and only) son-in-law, Brad. They will miss her unfailing love, wicked sense of humor, ability to get them to laugh just by saying a certain word, and her uncanny ability to find a song to fit every occasion. The family wishes to thank the nursing and CNA staff of St. Catherine’s Hospital along with Drs. Chua, Badrudduja, and Campagna-Gibson for the kind and compassionate care provided even as they cope with the stress and burnout experienced as the pandemic lingers. Due to the current Covid situation, a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Canine Companions for Independence or First Presbyterian Church Kenosha.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111 60th Street Kenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654 3533Visit & Sign Karen’s Online Memorial Book At:www.prokofuneralhome.com

I have so many memories of Karen from when she first came to Gateway. She was always so upbeat and fun to be around. Karen subbed for me in the Surgical Tech program and told me of a dream/nightmare she had about a "sterile transfer from a wheelchair." Regardless of her possible fears and feelings of inadequacy in this field I am certain she provided excellent information to my students. Though I have only seen her rarely since I retired, I have often thought of her and how lucky her students were to have her guide their experience into nursing.Nellie Frazee

It has been many years since I last saw Karen, but I recognized her smile immediately today when looking at the obituaries. Karen was an amazing human being and instructor. I loved her as my LPN instructor in the '70's and was so thrilled to have her again when I returned to school for my RN. Firm and fair, I learned so much from her. Her positivity, enthusiasm and caring was inspiring. Some people come into our lives for a reason or a season and leave footprints that live on forever in our hearts. She is someone who touched my heart and will be forever remembered. My condolences to her family.

i was truly saddened to see the news that Karen has left us and is now on yet a new adventure where she will shine just as she has all her life on this earth. What a joy to know Karen from Gateway. To be amongst the students she taught and to be part of the faculty/staff she worked with at Gateway. Just her presence and her beautiful smile and fun laugh should have been enough to make anyone happy to be with her, but she was just so much more. She embraced everyone with her loving words and kindness and caring and intelligence and she had the best personality always. I absolutely loved karen and will remember her all the rest of my life. She was so much to so many and will be missed everyday. My condolences to her loving family.

Karen was a true friend. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. We loved camping at Devil's Lake for many years at Devil's Lake State Park and we always had fun as our sites were always close by. We shared wonderful memories of Fall getaways also starting with fall camping many years ago and then to sharing a fall getaway with our Church group in Baraboo . We will miss her greatly and wish our deepest condolences to her family.

Our days in the 4-H Dog Project are full of wonderful memories and fun times together. We shared our puns and enjoyed texting about the political scene and were looking forward to the next Downton Abbey movie. I loved her and will miss her so much.

Karen and I met at UW, in 1959. We both commuted from our respective small towns and had lunch together in the Student Union most days. One special memory was a camping trip with other friends at Devil’s Lake Park to celebrate graduating in 1963. We both loved Devil’s Lake. She was so smart, funny, pretty and kind. We stayed in touch over the years and when I went back to visit my family from my home in Texas, we often got together. I’ll miss her dearly. She gave so much to the world, more than she asked for. I pray for her family and friends to be comforted at this time of loss.
