Loving husband, father, brother, and uncle, Kevin C. Nelson, 63, of Brighton, passed away after a valiant fight with cancer on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at Aurora Medical Center – Kenosha surrounded by his loving family. Born in Kenosha on August 14, 1957, he was the son of the late C. Richard “Dick” and June (Glacken) Nelson. A lifelong resident of Kenosha, he was educated in local schools. He graduated from UW Parkside and received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. On August 4, 2020, he married Deanna Hertrich. Kevin dedicated his life's work to the care and welfare of all creatures great and small. He partnered with Bristol Veterinary Service in 1985; mainly focusing on large animals, performance horses, pleasure horses, food animals, 4H projects and any barnyard friend that needed assistance. However, his passion was for exotic animals and he served the Racine Zoo as veterinarian for over 30 years, treating everything from the largest cats to the tiniest of reptiles. He served as veterinarian for the Wisconsin State Fair, Racine County Fair, and assisted at Kenosha County Fair. In 2007, he was awarded the WVMA Veterinarian of The Year. Kevin cared for every patient and client with utmost compassion, dignity, and respect. Kevin was an avid lover of the outdoors and all things nature. Growing up in scouting and earning Eagle Scout; his peace came in spending time enjoying and celebrating the beauty of nature and all her creatures. In his youth he devoted his time to raising and training racing pigeons. His solace could be found hiking through the forests, paddling on the water, fly fishing or just watching the beauty of a sunset. He frequented many national, state and county parks, spending time on Lake of The Woods Canada and Door County Wisconsin. Football was also a huge passion for Kevin; pledging loyalty to his Packers, rarely a game missed. However, the heart of Kevin’s love, devotion and soul was given to his family. He labored hard to create a secure life and home for them; though he worked long days, once home family was all that mattered. His joy came from watching his pride and joy Nathan grow, spending time with him at sporting events, school activities, home projects and hobbies or simply going fishing. His devotion and endless love to his life partner and wife Deanna was immeasurable, supporting her in all her dreams and adventures. His family grieves greatly for his loss but celebrates and cherishes the time they had; memories made, and love shared. So many lives were made brighter through knowing Kevin; family, friends, clients, and the creatures he lovingly cared for. His loss is profound to all who knew him. In celebrating his love, kindness and devotion, his legacy will live forever. Surviving Kevin is his wife, Deanna; son, Nathan; brother, Scott (Kathie) Nelson; nieces and nephews, Rachel (Aaron Skidmore) Nelson, Capt Aaron Nelson, USAF, Ret. (Maj Mary Catherine Nelson, USAF), Melissa Johansen, and Kristen Johansen; mother-in-law, Evelyn Hertrich; sister-in-law, Denise (Jeff) Johansen; brother-in-law, Donald Hertrich; and is further survived by other relatives and many friends. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, John Hertrich; and a brother-in-law, Dennis Hertrich. I was fortunate to shadow Dr. Nelson as a high school student, and I learned so much riding along in his truck. I had my first farm visits with Dr. Nelson and especially loved our days at the Racine Zoo, where I got to see first hand his love of zoo and exotic animals. He was a great mentor, warm, friendly, and caring to all - people and animals. He helped set me on my own path toward veterinary medicine and I have recently had the joy of working with him on zoo animal cases through my position as a veterinary pathologist. I'm grateful that our paths crossed and know he will be missed by many. Heartfelt condolences to his cherished family.

Kevin was a friend and classmate at Ross University. We shared so many laughs, ups and downs, studying hard in a tough environment at the time. He was always helpful then, and it's clear that he was always "that kind of guy" his entire, selfless life. Though we had lost contact, he has been a person thought of often. I know he was a proud dad, and a loving soul. I remember he loved the Packers and Cubbies. Time changes things, but this loss is a great one. So sorry to all whom he shared his life with, especially Deanna and Nathan. Kimberly NelsonRhode Island

“Dr. Kevin” has been my vet for over 30 years. I have many, many memories of Kevin. A few years ago my beautiful mare Rihanna had a horrible abscess. Dr Kevin treated her and she has fully recovered. There was great concern of infection and Kevin came every few days for antibiotic shots. The memory I keep thinking about was an early Saturday morning visit. Deanna held Rihanna while Kevin administered her shot. Afterwards they were off to a picnic or game or maybe fishing with young Nathen. They were very happy and excited about their fun weekend plans. This happy memory and time I will always remember. I hope time and found memories can help ease the pain of his loss for his family. My deepest sympathy, sue Mahle

The last time I saw you we were kids. It was Christmas and we were visiting the farm, stopped by your mom and dad's house where you were watching football with your dad. Maybe God will assign your next job as the guardian angel of the Green Bay Packers. RIP cousin.

I knew Dr Kevin for over 20 years. He was my horse’s vet from the point in time that I moved my first horse Ray to Kenosha back in 1998. When Kevin and Deanna moved to their farm I started farm sitting for them anytime they would go on adventures to Door County and Canada. I love taking care of their home and animals and in return Kevin had always been a blessing to my animals. When my Ray went downhill Kevin would stop out at times, daily just to check on him for me. When the unfortunate time came to say goodbye, Kevin was there with us. He even told me I could bury him on their farm if I needed. One of our very dear therapy horses, Goodie, is buried there. She was blessed to live there for her final few days under his care. Goodie was also the first horse that his son, Nathan, was ever on. I seem to recall Kevin being mad when he heard Nathan was on a horse! This last summer Kevin even helped me out with one of my Cairn Rescue USA fosters who was in need of a quick neuter. I have so many memories of all the long talks he would give us whenever we asked him a question, but my favorite will always be the time Stephanie Clausen Kubarth asked him how do you sanitize a tape worm. The concerned look on his face was priceless! My heart is sad that he has left us all too soon. Deanna and Nathan my deepest condolences go out to you. ((((Hugs))))Katie K

I will miss Kevin and his immense knowledge of our horses. Back about 27 years ago, he diagnosed an incredibly bizarre incident with my horse. He was sweating profusely in one quadrant of his body, that part dripping with sweat. He gave him fluids and said he had a mild colic that was pressing on a nerve effecting that quadrant. It was 2 days before our regional competition. He came back the next day and said take him. I have so much respect for him as a vet and a long time friend. You will be missed by many Kevin. Kevin was a kind man, dedicated to his family and to the whole world of animals. He raised a great son, Nathan, and was a perfect partner for his wife, Deanna, whom he adored. He was a committed vet, always available when needed. I credit him with finally getting rid of the warts and cancerous growths on my horse, Charm’s face. It was always a pleasure to be at his home. I will miss him.

Deanna and Nathan, the two memories I had about Kevin was when he was out working on Grey. I asked him what was going on as he had a look of love in his eyes and he said that he found his soul mate with you. Shortly after, he was out again working on Grey and said that the love of his life was pregnant....he was going to be a father to a son! He was so excited and was looking forward to his family! He was devoted to the two of you!💕
