Raymond Anthony Forgianni Jr.

1949 ∼ 2020

Raymond A. “Ray” Forgianni, 71, of Kenosha, passed away from complications of COVID-19, on Saturday, September 26, 2020, at Froedtert South – Kenosha. Born in Kenosha, on April 23, 1949, he was the son of the late Raymond A. Forgianni, Sr. and Josephine (Scalise) Forgianni. On June 30, 1973, he married Carole A. Chiappetta at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and together they raised two daughters in Kenosha. Ray earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at University of Wisconsin-Madison and went on to be awarded a Master of Science degree in Urban Affairs from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Ray was the City Planner and Director of City Development for the City of Kenosha for 33 years, retiring in 2006. Refusing to let retirement slow him down, Ray went on to become the founder and president of the board of directors for the Kenosha Common Market, which runs Kenosha HarborMarket. Ray loved his community and worked to make it better through historic preservation, renewal and revitalization of urban spaces and lakefront restoration. Ray was also active in Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation (WWBIC), serving on its Southeast Advisory Committee for over two decades. His contributions to Kenosha will continue to be enjoyed by citizens and visitors for years to come. In 2018, he was an award winner of Kenosha’s 10 Exceptional People for his work in the community. Ray brought the same passion to his hobbies and interests as he did to his work. In particular, he enjoyed gardening, traveling through Europe with his wife, and was an accomplished cook and a connoisseur of wine. Above all he loved people and places and sought to realize the potential in each to make his city a better place to live. Ray is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carole; two daughters, Andrea (Andrew Imoehl) Forgianni and Gina Forgianni; and three grandchildren, Chiara, Raymond, and Giovanna. He is further survived by loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Ray's family would like to thank Dr. Neil Shepler for decades of care, and Dr. Joshua Bloom as well as the nurses and staff at Froedtert South who provided excellent and compassionate care to Ray and his family. They would also like to thank Carole's siblings and their spouses, with special thanks to Rita Chiappetta and Art Maurer, for their steadfast love and support. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon on Saturday, October 10th at Place de Douai (at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 56th Street). Out of respect for high risk individuals attending the visitation, please wear a mask and respect social distancing. A Mass of Christian Burial was held privately at St. Mary Catholic Church. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations in honor of Ray be made to WWBIC to carry on the advocacy and support that Ray provided to countless small businesses. Mark , Lisa, Megan and Ben Johnson all extend our sympathies to Carole, Andrea , Gina and families. We are of course heartbroken to acknowledge your loss of the husband, father and grandfather of your family and the loss of our friend Ray. We will always remember with immense fondness, among other events, the 4th of July picnics followed by the caravan to Simmons Island where we all watched the fireworks, the kids playing in the sand.In the bigger picture, Wow, what an impact Ray had on his community. Who else among us can leave such a legacy, first in City Development then at the farmers market? I love the market and would go most Saturdays for a delightful combination of fresh food and companionship. You always run into people you know and the vendors offer such wonderful variety. My sister in law, from Boston, is an avid "foodie" and when visiting remarked that our market was better than any of them there. That's pretty darn impressive for a city our size and we owe Ray much for this.Thank you Ray, for everythingMark & Lisa Johnson

Dear Carol,May God bless and comfort you and your family during this difficult period; please accept our sincere condolences. In 1990, I met Ray for the first time. He was a colorful, intelligent strong personality, with a get it done attitude. In one afternoon he pushed through a development for my partner and I, which was bogged down for weeks. He left a great impression on us. Most of what people hear about Ray's work accomplishments and philanthropy are about Harbor Park or the Farmer's Market. Although great accomplishments, Ray's foot print in Kenosha, influenced so much more than harbor Park and the farmer's Market. Ray also influenced people who wanted to Developed in the community to think out of the box and to produce quality long lasting sustainable Developments for Kenosha. The City of Kenosha's boundary's and tax base, would not be as large as it is today, if wasn't for Ray influencing Developer's to annex hundred's of acres into the City of Kenosha. Ray work long hours with his staff, Developer's, Water Utility, Mayors, Alderman, and other intergovernmental bodies and agencies to expand the City of Kenosha's South, West and Northern boundaries. Ray is part of an elite group of Kenosha influencers that have left their mark in the community, which will last for generations. Ray loved the City of Kenosha. If I could have seen him one last time, I would have thanked him for all the knowledge he showed me the path to learn, along with the camaraderie. Sadly missed.Jon C Greco

My heartfelt condolences to Carole and Ray’s family. As Gary’s younger brother, I was often on the outside looking in to his friends from Kenosha and Madison. Ray was part of that group and such a colorful and fun group it was (see attached photos from I believe a 2001 reunion in Madison). We’ve all gone our separate ways, but the wonderful bonds from that era last forever.Rest in peace Ray, Jim Gallo (NJ/NY)

Deb and I are shocked and saddened by the stunning news of your passing. Your insight and vision for the City of Kenosha will live on forever, making people happy.Your accomplishments as an urban designer were great to observe and we will always smile when we recall our time spent with you on the "Focus 2000" committee in 1998-1990. Our love to Carole Andrea, Gina, and the entire family especially Rita Chiapetta and Art Mauer, as well as the myriad of friends that you made in your life. You graced our community and lives for too short a time but in that time, you transformed our beloved city and enriched our lives. You will be sorely missed but forever appreciated.
