Michael Louis Bjorn, 72, of Kenosha, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Froedtert South-Kenosha Medical Center Campus. Born in Kenosha on November 14, 1946, he was the son of Louis and Elsie (Hill) Bjorn. He served in the United States Army from July 1, 1966, until his honorable discharge on July 1, 1969. On July 17, 1976, he married Judith Marie Crow in Kenosha. Mike started his working career at Manny’s Music as a young teen. Manny Mitka was Mike’s mentor and gave him drum lessons, while Mike provided janitorial services in lieu of a paycheck. Mike later went on to work at Crystal’s Menswear and Mader’s Men’s Shop before starting his own business, Mike Bjorn’s Fine Clothing & Museum in Kenosha, that he owned and operated for the last 38 years. Mike’s son, Brett, and wife, Judy, had been managing the store with Mike, and will continue the business well into the future. Mike grew up in the Kenosha Schools music program, which was a big influence in his young life. He played in the school bands starting in grade school through high school. His love for music continued after high school while playing in different bands, with the longest running being “Bjorn & White.” He also was an art teacher at St. Joseph’s High School. He enjoyed gardening, museums, and history, especially relating to ships and dirigibles. He loved traveling with his beautiful bride, often spending a Sunday afternoon in the summer out riding in their convertible on county roads. Mike will be remembered for his bigger than life personality, and his role as “Mayor of Downtown.” Survivors include his wife, Judy Bjorn of Kenosha; a son, Brett (Bridget) Bjorn of Somers; a daughter, Courtney (Ryan Albert) Bjorn of Kenosha; and two beautiful granddaughters, Emery and Evelyn. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ashley Lynn Bjorn, brother, Richard Bjorn, and his parents. A Celebration of Life visitation will be held on Sunday, June 9th, at Proko Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, we know Mike would be thrilled to have donations made to the Manny Mitka Scholarship Fund. Checks may be made out to Kenosha Community Foundation - Mitka Fund and mailed to Kenosha Community Foundation, 600-52nd Street, Suite 110, Kenosha, WI 53140.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111-60th StreetKenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654-3533Visit & Sign Mike’s Online Memorial Book at:www.prokofuneralhome.com

I met Mike years ago in High School, who didn't know Mike back then. That smile, and great personality was hard to miss. My career took me away from Kenosha, but some friends and many, many memories will always keep me anchored to that great Wisconsin town. I mutual friend of ours, Ken Duller played lots of music with Mike, and always had a kind word to share with me about him.My Broadcasting career has taken me to some of the largest cities in this country. However, whenever I had the chance to stop in Mikes store, I would. Why? I knew Mike would have the "funkiest" and most colorful Hawaiian shirts to choose from short of my getting on a plane to Honolulu. The best part of know Mike over 40 + years was, no matter how long it took me to find my way back to Kenosha...Mike never forgot my name.I know I'll never forget his.Mike, if you bump into Buddy Rich, tell him you're available now to give lessons!Tomm RiversSan Antonio, Texastommrivers@icloud.com

Mike and I palled around in High School, when we were both members of the orchestra. Over the years, Mike was a good friend, who I always enjoyed seeing. His memory will live on.

Every time I came home to visit I would have to make a stop to see Mike. He was my art teacher at St. Joe's. I always knew that no matter what I'd get a smile and a hug from Mike. No matter what was going on in my life I knew I'd be smiling after I paid him and his store a visit. He touched so many lives. He was simply bigger than life.

It was my pleasure to have performed with Mike and Jim for a time back in the late 70's at George's Bar. It was the best of times. We were all serious musicians, but we all understood bringing fun to the performance. Mike was always both a consummate drummer and a showman. We made great music and had fun doing it. Mike understood the importance of style and class. He will be missed.

I was lucky enough to get the "Mike Bjorn" experience when getting fitted for my wedding tux. I hadn't interacted with Mike much before but I heard stories from David and the rest of the Houghton family. The stories did not do the experience justice. Mike was very much a man with a zest for life and a love for his business. I'm glad we met and we are lesser without him among us. Judy, Brett, Courtney and the rest of the Bjorn family. You have my deepest sympathies. He lives on in yours and the hearts of others.

Mike was always such a fun guy. He played in the Kenosha Pops with me and he also supplied our tuxes for my wedding. My prayers are with all the family. He will be sadly missed. God's peace. Paul Willems' Family - Proverbs 3:5-6

I am sorry to hear about Michael. He worked for my dad Gabe Cohen at Crystals Men's Store. I visited his store downtown's several years ago, and it was a delight seeing him and the crazy store! My heart goes out to you, his family and friends. Sharon
