Esther Chulew, 89, died on Monday, August 20, 2018, in Madison, WI. She was born in Bessarabia, Romania, to Israel and Tova Averbuch. During World War II, the family moved several times to stay ahead of the German advance. At the end of the war, she met and married Bernie (Boruch) Chulew in a displaced persons camp in Vienna, Austria. When her parents’ request to emigrate to Israel was granted, she and Bernie joined them. Shortly after their arrival, their twin sons, Joe and Sam, were born. In 1959, the family immigrated to Kenosha, WI, to join Bernie’s family and became U.S. citizens. Throughout her career, Esther worked mainly in retail in women’s fashion at Lepp & Company and Holleb’s. Among her many skills were cooking and baking which she parlayed into part-time teaching at Kenosha Technical Institute. She also created recipes for Merkt’s Cheese and for friends’ gelato business in Chicago. She was preceded in death by Bernie, her husband of 68 years; her parents; and her brother. She is survived by her sons, Joe and Sam; nephews and nieces; and brother-in-law, Marty Kraemer.
