Joan Elizabeth Hawbaker

1926 ∼ 2017

Joan (Miller) Hawbaker was born in Decatur, IN, on April 12, 1926, to Casper and Margaret (Omler) Miller and graduated to heaven on December 18, 2017. Joan graduated from Decatur Catholic High School in Indiana and Saint Agnes School of Nursing in Fond du Lac, WI. She worked as an RN at Shady Lawn West and Midway Manor in Kenosha, WI. A life-long volunteer in many ways, she coordinated and lovingly volunteered at St. Joseph Home for the Aged and Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Adoration programs. Joan spent countless hours praying for an end to abortion and in support of pro-life causes. Joan was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Kenosha. At her residence, St. Joseph Home for the Aged, she enjoyed doing puzzles with her floor mates and would whisper to them, “2nd floor is the best floor”. She was proceeded in death by her husband Lowell Hawbaker, her daughter Anne Marie, her son John and her brothers William and Lee Miller and sister Margaret Jane. She is sadly missed by her children Margaret (Peter) Gadsby, Mary Therse “Terri” (Tom) Bernacchi, Michael Hawbaker, Paul (Colleen) Hawbaker, Aggie (Randy) Heckman, James (Tammi) Hawbaker, David (Kay) Hawbaker, Jane (Wally) Sparks, Julia (John) Bastin, Elizabeth (Chuck) Veillon; siblings Maurice Miller and Sr. Laverne Miller; 43 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and counting. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 22nd, at the Proko Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A brief prayer service will be held on Saturday, December 23rd, at 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church at 12:30 p.m. Entombment will follow at All Saints Mausoleum. Even though we have not seen her much these last few years, we will always remember her pleasant smile and friendly laugh. We also remember how much it meant to my dad when her and Sr. Laverne would come to Decatur to visit. Thanks.
