Mario Albi, 88, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at United Hospital System-St. Catherine’s Medical Center Campus. Born on July 13, 1929, in Cotronei, Catanzuro, Italy, he was the son of the late Frank and Caterina (Greco) Albi. He migrated to Kenosha with his mother, sister and brother in July of 1937. He attended local schools and graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School in 1949. He also attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated in 1953, and later completed his master’s degree from St. John’s University in New York City. On September 6, 1952, he married Mary A. Curry at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on December 20, 1995. In September of 1953, he moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. In 1956 he began teaching English, Speech, and Drama at Sarah J. Hale High School. In 1972, he received his license as assistant Principal-Guidance. He retired from the New York School system in July of 1984. In 1961, he joined UNICO National, the largest Italian American Service Organization in the country. He was elected and installed as National President at the Carrillon Hotel in Miami Beach, FL, in August of 1974, for a term of one year. In 1975, he was instrumental in forming a coordinating committee consisting of eight of the largest Italian organizations in the United States. He was elected chairman of the committee in 1975. On August 4, 1976, he and his committee were honored to meet with President Gerald Ford at the White House. As chairman of the committee, he conducted the meeting with President Ford in the Cabinet Room. In October of 1979, he was honored as “Man of the Year” at the Italian American Society Annual Columbus Day Dinner. In October of 1993, he and his family returned to Kenosha to live. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. In 2002, he was honored by the Italian Business and Professional Association in “Recognition” for the efforts in developing and enhancing the image of the Italian Community. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, reading, cooking, and traveling. Survivors include his daughter, Christina Albi of Kenosha; son, Frank (Pam) Albi; granddaughter, Paige Elizabeth of Sun Prairie; and a brother, Dominic (Sarina) Albi of Boca Raton, FL. Preceding Mario in death was his sister, Gensi Angotti. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 4th, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 1919-54th Street, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. George Cemetery.
