Florence Wesselius

1922 ∼ 2017

Florence Wesselius
Florence Paul Wesselius passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 2, 2017, at Brookside Care Center from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. On April 27, 1922, she was born, along with her twin sister Ferne, to William and Nina (nee Cummings) Richardson in Alpha, Iowa. The twins were the youngest of six siblings. Florence attended Alpha School, graduating with her high school diploma. At the age of 16, she met Clayton (Zeke) Paul, and after her graduation they were married. Florence became a homemaker while Zeke became a farmer, a store clerk, and later a carpenter. Together they had seven children. In 1953 the family moved to Kenosha where Zeke had been offered a construction job. Florence and Zeke were founding members of Wesley United Methodist Church. Unfortunately, he was killed in a car accident in 1955. Florence later married Arthur Wesselius, and they had two daughters together. That marriage ended in divorce. After Zeke’s death, Florence had decided she needed to get an education if she was going to support her family. She enrolled at Kenosha Vocational School, which would later become Gateway Technical College. Despite interruptions in her education for children and her marriage to Art, she eventually completed her two-year degree and taught for a few years. She also worked as a bookkeeper. She later earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UW-Parkside and then a Master’s Degree from UW-Madison. Florence became the coordinator of adult education for Gateway and was instrumental in helping to establish programs for adult learners throughout the state. She received numerous awards from Gateway and other organizations for her work. She retired in 1988. She is survived by sons, Thomas (Judy) Paul, Wisconsin Rapids; Rick Paul, Sarasota, FL; and Douglas (Linda) Paul, North Liberty, IA; and daughters Alice (Bob Petrik) Gaertner, Naples, FL; Ferne (Tom, dec.) Cerqua, Kenosha; Karen Byrnes, Jacksonville, FL; Elizabeth (Tracy Harbilas) Greco, Sarasota, FL; and Cynthia Delgadillo, Kenosha. In addition, she is survived by her twin sister Ferne Ferguson, son-in-law Harry Searles, 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Florence was preceded in death by her parents; siblings James, Alice, Faye, and Ruvie; husband Clayton; daughter Ellen Searles; a grandson; a granddaughter; and two nieces. The family would like to thank the staff of Brookside Care Center for the wonderful care and kindness Florence received during her time there. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 10th, at Wesley United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 9th, at Proko Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Brookside Care Center Endowment Fund would be appreciated.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111-60th StreetKenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654-3533Visit & Sign Florence’s Online Memorial Book at:www.prokofuneralhome.com
