George Edward Urban, Sr., 93, of Pleasant Prairie, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at Brookdale North. Born on December 27, 1923, in St. Bernard, OH, he was the son of the late George A. and Helena (Recker) Urban. George in his younger years, while attending Roger Bacon High School, in Cincinnati, excelled in track as a miler. On June 2, 1945, he married LaVerne R. Bauschelt at St. George Catholic Church in Kenosha. George served in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II. He started working with the Kenosha Fire Department on October 15, 1948, where he served as Captain for 36 years, retiring on March 15, 1984. Following his retirement from KFD, George worked at Kenosha Hospital as Equipment Technician and later as Safety Director, until his retirement. George was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, the Navy Club Ship 40, Serra Club International, the Knights of Columbus Council 973, St. Jude League of Kenosha County, and the Kenosha Professional Firefighters, Local 414. He is survived by his wife, Laverne of Pleasant Prairie; and two sons, George Jr. and Gregory, both of Somers. In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by a brother, Carl F. Urban; and three sisters, Dorothy Urban, Helen Belafeld and Alberta Meiners. The family would like to extend a special thank you to HCR ManorCare, Brookdale North, Hospice Alliance and Father Todd from St. Anthony’s Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 17th, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will be private. George was a kind man and a tough firefighter. He always took care of his troops and was a good mentor to the younger firefighters like myself.
