Dorothy Marie Singer, 98, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 11, 1919, in Milwaukee, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Luella (Sligar) LeRoy. On February 15, 1941, she married Francis J. Singer, Sr. at St. George Catholic Church in Kenosha. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1997. When she was 52 years old, Dorothy enrolled at Gateway Technical College and graduated as a licensed practical nurse a year later. Following her graduation, she worked as a nurse at St. Catherine’s Hospital until retirement. Dorothy has always had a very positive attitude and strong faith in God. Dorothy was a historian for her Kenosha County Association, Home and Community Education (KCAHCE) group for many years, made soup once a month for the Shalom Center, was a member of the “Travel-Grams” Red Hat Group, led a weekly bible study group for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in her home and was program chairperson for their senior lunches, took communion to the housebound members of her parish, was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club, Kenosha Senior Center and St. Mary’s Lutheran Senior Center. She frequently participated in Kenosha Unified grade school Intergenerational Fair teaching children to make paper butterflies and angels. Dorothy was a well-respected woman in the Kenosha community and a wonderful example to everyone young and old. Dorothy is survived by her seven sons, Francis Jr. (Susan), David (Patricia), Raymond (Susan) all of Kenosha; Robert (Sherri) of Luck, WI, Lawrence (Nan) of Madison and John (Terry) of Delafield and Guy (Jose) Singer of Racine; six daughters, Sandra (James) Riese, Mary Lou (Dennis) Bryant-Schutz, Nancy (Peter) Valeri, Betty (Gary) Mentek, Lorraine (David) Lumley all of Kenosha and Dorothy (Claude) Cielonko of Cedar Park, TX; 41 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Priscilla LeRoy Terwilliger, her husband, Francis, her sister, Marjorie VanLanduyt and her daughter, Diane Singer on May 6, 1976. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 18th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Interment at All Saints Cemetery will follow.
