Boruch Chulew
Boruch “Bernie” Chulew, 94, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, July 23, 2016, in Madison, WI, following a brief illness. Bernie was born in Poland and as a young adult during World War II was active in a Zionist organization dedicated to the creation of the Jewish State of Israel. At the end of the war, he met and married Esther Averbuch in a displaced persons camp in Vienna, Austria. He and Esther immigrated to Israel where he joined the police force and where their twin sons, Joe and Sam, were born. In 1959, the family immigrated to Kenosha, WI. He was reunited with his parents and brothers and joined the family business, Barr Furniture. He took pride in his work and had a passion for making sure that every piece of furniture left the store in mint condition. In his youth Bernie was a talented soccer player, and in his retirement years he was an avid and skillful bridge player. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Esther; twin sons, Joe and Sam; and brothers, Manny Chulew, Edward Chulew and Marty Kraemer.
