James Vincent Angelo

1926 ∼ 2016

James Vincent Angelo, 89, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at his residence. He was born in Detroit, MI, on March 18, 1926, the son of the late William and Josephine (Mulé) Angelo. The family moved to Kenosha in 1930 and Jim attended local schools and graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School. Following graduation Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served during WWII and the Korean War. On September 1, 1951, he married Joan Spaay at St. Sebastian’s Catholic Church in Sturtevant, WI. Jim began his career at the Kenosha Parks Department and in 1949 he began working at his family’s flower shop, Angelo Florists which he ran successfully for more than 50 years. Active in civic affairs, he was a member of the Kenosha Jaycees; member and past president of the Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Florist Association; and regional director for the Society of American Florists. In 1992 he was named “Business Man of the Year” by the Kenosha Chamber of Commerce and Jim was invited to the White House twice: for tea with First Lady Barbara Bush as a member of the Society of American Florists and to serve on the floral committee for President Clinton’s first inauguration. Additionally, he was instrumental in starting the Horticultural Program at the Gateway Technical College where he served on the board for 25 years. Finally he and his wife Joan were co-honorary chairmen for Relay for Life for The American Cancer Society. Surviving Jim are his children: Michael Angelo of Kenosha; John (Lucy) of Denver, CO; Christine (Vince Ekroot) Angelo of Grand Marais, MN; and Carrie Angelo of Kenosha; as well as two grandchildren, Anthony (Jamie) Angelo of Kenosha and Christopher Ekroot (Megan) of Duluth, MN; and five great-grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and a great number of friends. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife Joan in 2004. Visitation will be held at Proko Funeral Home on Saturday, January 9th, from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held privately at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111-60th StreetKenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654-3533Visit Jim’s Online Memorial Book at:www.prokofuneralhome.com

I've known Jim aka "POPS" to me, for 18+ years and he was such an inspiration. I am so saddened by the loss, but I know he is smiling down on all of us with his beloved Joan by his side. I know I'll meet up with you again someday and see that wonderful smiling face of yours. Love you Pops...may you rest in peace.
