Leonard K. Glass, 88, of Kenosha, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015, at Hospice House in Pleasant Prairie with his daughter and son by his side. He was born in Kenosha on May 29, 1926, the son of the late Adolph and Mary (Gausaite) Glass. He attended local schools here in Kenosha and would have been in the graduating class of 1945 at Kenosha High School but enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1943. After graduating from the Navy Medical Corps School, he volunteered to serve in the Marine Corps and was transferred to Camp Pendleton where he attended and graduated from Field Medical School. Following graduation he was shipped overseas to the Guadalcanal where he joined the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division. During the Battle of Okinawa he was wounded and received a Purple Heart accommodation medal. On August 30, 1945, his Battalion was the first American regiment to set foot on Japanese soil and the first foreign invaders to ever enter the Japanese Mainland. Following WWII Leonard lived in Chicago and attended the Deforest Electronic Training School, where he received his diploma in 1951 along with a draft notice to report for active duty during the Korean Conflict. Following his tour of duty in Korea he returned home to Kenosha. On December 21, 1954, Leonard married Beverly J. Higgins at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Kenosha and also enlisted in the U.S Air Force where he served until he retired from active duty in 1970. After retirement from the Air Force he worked for Wisconsin Bell until he retired in 1988. During his lifetime Leonard enjoyed golfing, traveling, gardening and stamp collecting. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1865 of Kenosha and David Leet Post 552 in Somers. Surviving Leonard is his daughter, Deanna Glass of Kenosha; and his son, Howard (Darya) Glass of Gurnee, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly on February 5, 2002; and his son, Mark on March 24, 2015.
