Edward A. Jenkins, 87, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Brookside Care Center after a six month stay, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Oconomowoc, WI, on November 13, 1926, he was the son of the late Edward R. and Margaret (Glick) Jenkins. He was educated in the schools of Milwaukee. He attended the UW-Milwaukee. He was then drafted in January of 1945 into the U.S. Army and served in the Prisoner of War Camp in Arkansas which housed German SS officers. He was honorably discharged in December 1945. Upon returning from service, he attended the Business Institute of Milwaukee. Ed married his high school sweetheart, Thelma I. Smith, on August 16, 1947, almost 68 years ago. Ed spent 22 years in the trucking business, working his way up from safety director to Kenosha Terminal Manager with Yule Truck Lines. He held the position of City of Kenosha Director of Transportation from 1975 to 1991 where he oversaw the city bus operation, harbor (both commercial and pleasure), parking, and was instrumental in the expansion of the Kenosha Municipal Airport. After retirement, Ed was employed with the Brightondale Golf Course. He then became safety director for Transit Mutual Insurance Corporation of Wisconsin, permanently retiring at the age of 80. Ed was a charter member of Holy Nativity Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities over the years. He was involved in many social and service organizations including the Elks Club, Downtown Rotary Club, Sunrise Rotary, the Danish Brotherhood, Jaycees and the Moose Lodge. He also served as president of the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce. Ed will be remembered for his passion of portraying the “Jolly Old Elf” every Christmas Season for over 50 years. He enjoyed traveling both in the United States and visiting friends in Germany. Camping was also an important part of every summer. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed swimming. At a young age, he played baseball, enjoyed biking (especially a trip around Lake Michigan), was on the high school football and gymnastic teams, and enjoyed bowling. Ed was a sports fan, following Bradford High School, Wisconsin Badgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers, and supported the sporting activities of his children and grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Jenkins of Kenosha; his children, Dale Jenkins of Cambridge, WI, Christine (Ed) Munz of Manchester, NH, Scott (Mary) Jenkins of Atlanta, GA, and Carol (Fernando) Jenkins-Espinosa of Madison, WI; a sister, Mary Ann Muehe of Hancock, WI; a brother, Raymond Firnges of Phoenix, AZ; sisters-in-law, Mary Jenkins of Phoenix, AZ, and Kathryn Westra of Northumberland, PA; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Jenkins of Scarsdale, NY; and a brother, Donald Jenkins of Phoenix, AZ. The Jenkins family wishes to thank the Brookside staff, especially his devoted caregivers. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 4th, at Proko Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will continue on Tuesday, August 5th, at Holy Nativity Lutheran Church, 2313-17th Avenue, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
