Dorothy Mary Sanville

1940 ∼ 2014

She lived her life with a spirit of adventure. Born February 27, 1940 in Stevens Point, WI, Dorothy Mary Lewis Sanville was the youngest of 11 children reared in a family bursting with love, affection, song, and spirit. From an early age Dorothy intuitively grasped that life was an amazing, miraculous gift. Over the span of seven decades, she treasured life's surprises, welcomed its daily routines, and, through faith, learned to embrace adversity with amazing grace. Dorothy's greatest joy was her family. In 1960 she married Glenn Grant and, with him, gave birth to the pride and joy of her life: her son, Timothy, and daughter, Jennifer. The unfailing love she experienced from her beloved children eased the heartache she felt when her marriage was annulled in 1979. In 1981, she met Leon Sanville, whom she once wrote gave her the "courage to love and trust deeply again." A year later, they were united in marriage at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Sheboygan, WI -- where a life filled with precious new adventures began. Her last spoken words to her husband were, “I love you, too.” Dorothy's God-given vocation was mother- and grand motherhood, and her avocation was play. Dorothy's light shined most brightly when she was with her children and grandchildren. Whether sitting in the stands at one of their sporting events, listening with an attentive and compassionate ear to the stories of their lives, attending one of their musical concerts or plays, playing with them at the beach, or beaming with pride at their many accomplishments, Dorothy loved her children and grandchildren beyond words. With them her childlike curiosity and playful personality soared -- in the sandbox, on the croquet lawn, at the amusement park, or while relishing the many fun moments they enjoyed in places both near and far. In her final hours, her children and grandchildren thanked Dorothy for her abundant love: through tears, they spoke of the indelible handprint she had left on their hearts and promised to carry forth her love by keeping faith and family first. Dorothy loved life and the opportunities it offered to lift up others. As the day receptionist at the Aurora Kenosha Clinic, she brought smiles to hundreds of faces with her "Cat in the Hat" and other silly seasonal headpieces. Many Lombardi Cancer Clinic patients and their families will also remember her genuine warmth and generous spirit. Among the Aurora staff -- first in Sheboygan and, then later, Kenosha -- she was known as the classy lady who walked the hospital hallways, eating her lunch, reading a book, and greeting others -- all at the same time! Prior to moving to Kenosha in 1999, Dorothy worked for nearly 20 years in the office at Nemschoff Chairs in Sheboygan. Before and after her retirement from Aurora in 2012, Dorothy offered her upbeat spirit to others as a volunteer at the Meadow View Nursing Home (Sheboygan) and the Aurora Clinic and Hospital. Dorothy was always "on the go." She loved to travel, and she made memorable trips to Europe, the Caribbean, Alaska, and up and down both U.S. coasts. She could not resist a parade, an outdoor concert, roller coasters, or a walk along Lake Michigan or Lake Andrea. She had a passion for all things Disney, and everywhere she went she relished drinking her Diet Coke. Dorothy was a feisty competitor -- at the card table, in the gym, or when playing board games. Movies, music, and dancing lifted her spirits, and she enjoyed sharing her gift of song in several church folk groups and choirs. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving and generous parents, Henry and Catherine (Nytes) Lewis; her caring and often crazy fun sisters Gertrude Lewis, Joan Lewis, Margaret Hudson, Kathryn Fitzgerald, Genevieve McManus, and Carol Koerschner; and by her precious granddaughter, Jeanne Carol Hilpertshauser. She is survived by her husband, Leon Sanville; her children, Timothy Grant (Marilyn) of Gurnee, IL and Jennifer (Steve) Haworth of Beach Park, IL; four step-children, Thomas (Lorie) Sanville and Kathryn Sanville of Sheboygan, WI, Susan Gates of Elkhart Lake, WI, and Edwin Sanville of New Hope, MN; five grandchildren, Katie and Alex Grant, Marcus Haworth, Thomas Abromaitis, and Samuel Hilpertshauser; two sisters, Mary Lewis and Helen (Michael) Magulski; two brothers, Robert Lewis and James (Judy) Lewis; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. To all: your friendship and love enriched Dorothy's life immeasurably. To those who prayed for and visited Dorothy in her challenging last months: thank you. For Dorothy, loving and spending time with her family and friends was the most excellent part of her great lifetime adventure. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 9091 Prairie Ridge Blvd., Pleasant Prairie, WI. A visitation for Dorothy will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: the music ministries at St. Anne Church Pleasant Prairie, WI 53158 or St. Peter Claver Church, 1441 So. 11th Street, Sheboygan WI 53081; Hospice Alliance, 10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd., Pleasant Prairie, WI 53158, or to a charity of your choice. Leon, Tim, and Jennifer would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff who cared for Dorothy in her final months at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, LifeCare Hospital of Pewaukee, the Rehabilitation Hospital of Wisconsin, Aurora Medical Center Kenosha, Hospice Alliance, and St. Joseph's Home Kenosha. My deepest sympathy to Jennifer,Tim, and your families. Jennifer you were a kind and fun friend growing up in our years at St Pete's. I often wondered about you through the years. I remember your mom and what a kind lady she was, and she held herself with such class. I'm glad she found a good life with Leon. My sympathy to Leon and his daughter Kathy who I worked with and think alot of also. God bless all of you at this sad time. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I'll light a candle at my church here in Medford, Oregon.

Dorothy was indeed "the face of Aurora." Her smile lit up the entrance as she welcomed all into the AMC-K Clinic. Our hearts are broken, but we will be eternally blessed because we had the opportunity to be a part of Dorothy's life. May God's healing grace bring comfort to us all as we grieve her death.
