Janet I. Petrelli, 94, of Kenosha, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2014, at Kindred South. She was born on December 13, 1919, in Reedsburg, WI, the 4th child of Paul and Alma Struck. Janet was educated in the schools of Reedsburg, WI, and graduated from the first two year College in Sauk County for teachers in 1939. She began her teaching career in the Reedsburg rural community for four years. Later in life she took the North Shore to Chicago from Kenosha on weekends and two summers, where she received her degree from the National College of Evanston. In 1943, she went to California to see her brother off to war and obtained employment in the office at Camp Beal in Marysville, CA, for three years. Janet was the only civilian to take part in the soldiers broadcast from the Army Theater; she was also featured many times in the Bee Liner News Paper at Camp Beale. As fate would have it she met the love of her life Joseph R. Petrelli. In 1946, Janet and Joe moved to Plano, IL, where she taught, and in 1947, they moved to Kenosha where she taught kindergarten at Bain School. On April 3, 1948, she married Joseph R. Petrelli at St. Anthony’s Rectory, and on May 29, 1949, they were blessed with a daughter Julie. Janet’s teaching career spanned for over 34 years at various schools in the area and in the process of teaching, Joseph and her started a business, “Joseph’s Bootery and Shoes” at the state line. She retired from Durkee School after 20 years of teaching. Janet and Joe had a wonderful life together; they enjoyed recreational dancing every Saturday night, and she enjoyed reading, bowling, dining out and going to the casino. She was a member of St. Mary’s Lutheran Church and a member of the Friendly Center. Surviving Janet is her son-in-law, Kurt Van Kammen of Kenosha, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe in 1990; he daughter, Julie 2012; her parents, three brothers and two sisters. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Kindred South for all the care given to Janet. Funeral services will be held for Janet on Friday, January 10th, at St. Mary’s Lutheran Church, 2001-80th Street, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be held at All Saints Mausoleum privately.
