Mr. Leo Scalis, 93, of Kenosha, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2013. Leo loved life and lived it to the fullest. A first-generation American who was the son of Italian immigrants from the region of Calabria in the town of Catanzaro, Mr. Scalis quit high school to help support his mother and four sisters. He was part of the "Greatest Generation" and proudly served in WWII with the 454th Squadron as an MPEG and served with distinction during the invasion at Normandy. He was a man's man, a great storyteller and a natural born salesman. Born November 4, 1919, Mr. Scalis was the son of the late Nicolas and Antoinette (Barberio) Scalise. He was born in Wakefield, Michigan, a community in which many Italian immigrants were resettling at the time and where his father worked in an open pit iron mine. The family moved to Kenosha in the early 20’s. After his father's death during his ninth grade year, Mr. Scalis left school to help support his family during the Great Depression at an ammunition plant in Wisconsin. "He gave his paycheck to his mother," said his family. Of the $25 or $30 he made, he got to keep $2. He loved his mother with all his heart. During the war Mr. Scalis worked as a Military Police Escort Guard moving prisoners across the Atlantic Ocean. He fought in the Battle of Normandy during the liberation of France, landing at Utah Beach. He was injured in the war and was a disabled veteran. He was honorably discharged. Mr. Scalis loved the sport of boxing. He trained boxers to become Golden Glove champions. Leo resided in Kenosha most of his 93 years and loved passing the time watching the waves come in on Lake Michigan. Mr. Scalis had six children and loved them deeply. He is survived by his one son, Kyle (Lori) Scalis; three daughters, Kimberly (Jan) Hole, Julie (Louis) Fernandez and Antoinette Heidi Scalis; three grandsons, Ryan, Kenny and Hayden; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, are his two sons, Kevin and William “Bill”; four sisters, Josephine Forgianni, Marion Knutell, Caroline Scalise, and Carmel Witke; and a brother, Anthony Scalise. Leo was loved deeply by his family and will be greatly missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 2nd, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. James Cemetery.
