Giovanna Costa Garretto, 93, passed away peacefully at her son’s home on November 26, 2012. She was born on October 24, 1919 to Giuseppe and Rosa Costa in Vizzini, Sicily. She was united in marriage to Giovanni Garretto on December 28, 1948. He preceded her in death on June 5, 1978. Together with their three sons, they immigrated to the United States in 1966, and settled in Evanston, Illinois where they pursued and lived the American Dream. They were strong advocates of education and encouraged their sons to take full advantage of the opportunities that America afforded them. Giovanna worked as a seamstress to help create a good life for her family, where she developed lifelong friendships with those she worked with. One of Giovanna’s greatest joys was cooking for her family and friends, where second and third servings were mandatory. She kept an immaculate house and large garden and loved to share her hospitality with all who stopped by. She was loved immediately by all who met her. She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest! Giovanna is survived by her three sons, Mario (Delaine) and Joe (Jean) both of Kenosha, Salvatore, of Northbrook, IL; one brother, Giovanni Costa and sister-in-law, Michelina of Vizzini, Sicily. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, John, Bob (Sandhya), Samantha, Torry, Andrew, Marissa and Andrea Garretto along with many nieces and nephews in Sicily and Argentina. Giovanna was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Ala, Krystyna and Sophia, Giovanna’s caregivers for the past several years, Gloria Ziarko and Hospice Alliance.
