Katherine E. Helwig, 87, of Kenosha passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at Harbor House/Azura Memory Care of Kenosha South with her daughter at her side. Born in Kenosha on February, 27, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Schaefer) Diener. A lifelong resident of Kenosha, she was educated in local schools. On September 16, 1950, she married Harold W. Helwig at Frieden’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on September 25, 2010. She had been employed at Simmons Co. as a Mattress Seamstress and during World War II she was a Parachute Seamstress. Katherine was a member of Frieden’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and was an amazing mother, homemaker and cook. Surviving are her daughter, Janice Legler of Pleasant Prairie, WI; and one grandson, Eric Legler. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Kay Gallo; a grandson, Bryan Legler; two brothers, Fred and John Diener; and a sister, Marie Burch. Katherine’s family would like extend a special thank you to the staff of Harbor House for all of their compassionate care given to their mother and grandmother. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 17th, at Frieden’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park.
