Jack Albert Finch, 90, definitely one of “The Greatest Generation” passed away peacefully on March 29th, 2012, at St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Pleasant Prairie surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born on July 12, 1921, in Racine to Ray Sr. and Christi (nee Sinclair-Mainland) Finch. He grew up in Racine and attended local schools and graduated from Park High School, where he met Julia Stupak. They were married on May 3rd, 1943, at Holy Innocence Episcopal Church in Racine. Jack enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1942, and served his country with tremendous bravery as he fought in the battle at Iwo Jima. After the war he returned home to finish his education and to start his family. Jack finished his studies and received a degree in education from the LaCrosse State Teachers College. Jack taught for thirty-six years as an elementary school teacher for the Kenosha Unified School District, retiring in 1986. He and Julia were very active and proud of their work with the Kenosha Teachers Union and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. Jack and Julia had four daughters, Candace, Janice, Mary, and Christy. Jack’s children were his pride and joy. Jack planned wonderful vacations for his family that spanned different parts of the United States every summer while his children were young. In 1964 Jack and Julia opened Finch’s Day Camp where they facilitated activities for hundreds of local children every summer through 1974. Jack’s hobbies included golf, woodworking, painting, and traveling abroad. He also volunteered as a member of the Ski Patrol in Wilmot. Jack’s legacy lives on through his family of which he was always extremely proud. He is survived by his four daughters, Candace (Don) Fessenden of Schaumburg, IL, Janice Finch Dimitrijevic of Kenosha, Mary (Larry) Mason, and Christy (Doug) Revsbeck of Lakeville, MN. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Don (Dr. Sara Mauer) Fessenden, Julie (Jeff) Reed, Jack (Ann) Fessenden, Heidi (Dave) Dryer, Magda (Neil) Gammon, Alexander Finch Dimitrijevic, and Corinne and Connor Revsbeck. He is further survived by great grandchildren, Josh, Jim, and Jennifer Reed, Thomas and Lauren Fessenden, Ryan and Christian Dryer, Graham Gammon, and Natalia Henderson; great-great grandson, Charlie Taylor; and many beloved nieces and nephews. His AFS exchange student daughter, Dr. Myriam Prieto, her husband Dr. Henry Torrente and their children Silvia Torrente Robinson and Santiago Torrente of Colombia, South America, also survives him. Jack was preceded in death by Julia, his beautiful bride of 58 years on November 26th, 2001; his parents, Ray Sr. and Christi; and his siblings, Ray Jr., Marcella Praether and Jean Finch. He is also preceded in death by his cherished son-in-law and best fishing buddy, Alex Dimitrijevic; and his grandson in infancy, Alexander Matthew Dimitrijevic. The family would like to thank Dr. Janet Chua, Dr. Peter Mariani, the physicians at the Veterans Satellite Clinic in Kenosha and also St. Catherine’s Medical Center and staff for all of the compassion shown to him and his family. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday April 28th, 2012, at 1:00 pm at St. Andrews Episcopal Church 6615-26th Avenue, Kenosha. A military service will follow including a Marine Honor Guard. A gathering of friends and family will be held after the service in the church hall.
