James Kenneth Gourley, Sr., 83, of Kenosha, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at United Hospital System-Kenosha Campus. Born in Chicago, IL, on September 6, 1927, he was the son of the late Kenneth L. and Helen B. Gourley and lived his life in Kenosha and Twin Lakes. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest, IL, where he captained the 1945 baseball team. In 1944 and 1945 he had try outs with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. On October 16, 1993, he married Mary E. Russell. He worked at the Southport Lumber Company, a family owned business, from 1950-1992. In 1966, he established Lawn Masters, Inc., servicing thousands of over 25 years. He also built the first fast oil change business in 1970. He patented Westmac residential core aerators sold in 44 states and Canada. He served as president of the Photomark Corp., establishing Fotomats in the mid-west. As a member of the Lake Forest Academy Alumni Council, he served for several years as its treasurer. In 1964, he established the Kiwanis Boys Baseball League serving as commissioner for 10 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 750 and a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Western Kenosha since 1958. In 1969 he was named the Kiwanis Man of the Year. He loved to spend his spare time with his wife and family at their Twin Lakes home which he built in 1957 and on their double-deck pontoon boat. Surviving are his wonderful wife, Mary, his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa A. and Mark E. Kober; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four step children; nine step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27th, at Proko Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Monday at Proko Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
