Robert Gage KANEHL
Robert G. "Bob" Kanehl, 89, of Union Grove, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove. Born in Kenosha on May 18, 1922, he was the son of the late Edward and Ella (Gage) Kanehl. He graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School in 1940. He served in Europe during World War II with the 82nd Airborne Division from September 1942 until December 1945. He was married to Grace (Switalski) Kanehl from 1949 to 1971. He was employed one year with Frost Co., four years at First National Bank, and 34 years as a life insurance agent for John Hancock Life Insurance Co. which included seven years as a manger of the John Hancock office in Racine. He was a member of the State of Wisconsin Securities Agents and a life member of VFW Post 1865. He retired in June 1982 and moved to Woodruff, WI, where he had a cottage on Towanda Lake. He spent his winters in Port Richey, FL, until January of 2003 when he moved to Union Grove, WI. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. Survivors include two sons, Steve (Sandra) Kanehl of Suffolk, VA, and Paul of Sauk City, WI; a daughter, Barbara (Dennis) Waltman of Waterford, WI; five grandchildren, Dawn Kanehl, Jenny Dahir-Kanehl, Jesse Dahir-Kanehl, Christine Waltman and Nick Waltman; a great-grandchild, Bailey Jones; a sister, Kay Lemke of Kenosha. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Grace Kanehl of Racine; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Josephine Kanehl of New Port Richey, FL; a brother-in-law, George Lemke of Kenosha; and a special friend, Ferlie Jacobson of Rhinelander, WI. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Wisconsin Veterans Home for their kind and compassionate care of Bob during his stay. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 17th, at Proko Funeral Home at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be held on Saturday, June 18th, at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. with full military honors. Visitation will be held on Friday at Proko Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
