Mary Hamblen

1926 ∼ 2011

Mary Hamblen
Mary Hamblen, 85, of Kenosha, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011. Born in Kenosha on February 28, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Stella (Krupski) Dzwinel. She was a lifelong resident of Kenosha and was educated in local schools. Mary was employed as an executive secretary in the nursing department at Kenosha Memorial Hospital for 20 years. Survivors include her three daughters, Sharon (James) Duwe of Grafton, WI, Susan (Jay) Atherton of Chilton, WI, and Kathy (William) Rentz of Beloit, WI; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and was proudly awaiting the birth of a new great-granddaughter due in four weeks. She is also survived by her beloved friend of 75 years, Dorothy Maegaard. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and John; and a sister, Gladys Wojcehowicz. Mary had a love of books and reading she instilled in all of her girls. A voracious reader since childhood, she remained a weekly patron of the library. Mary also loved golf. She played the game with passion and intensity and is the only member of her family to have won a trophy in that sport. She served for three years as president of the women’s golf club at Muni Golf Course in Kenosha in the 1960’s. When she no longer played she remained an avid fan, watching every golf match she could find on TV, and though her "favorite player" changed over the years, her zest for the game never wavered. Special to her eleven grandchildren, Mary was affectionately referred to as the "Gram Poobah" by them as they all gathered for the yearly family reunions. She loved her family profoundly and wore the crown of matriarch with pride, joy and an abundance of good humor. What her daughters will cherish most are the yearly weekend pajama parties on her birthday. For the past 37 years they gathered for good food, Scrabble, puzzles, Farkle, watching golf, and lots of laughter. As promised, they will continue the tradition in her honor. "She will always be with us, in our hearts, our voices, and more and more as years go by, in our mirrors." As per Mary’s wishes, all services will be private.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111-60th StreetKenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654-3533Visit Mary’s Online Memorial Book at:www.prokofuneralhome.com

After having worked at Kenosha Hospital many years, I felt like I knew Mary's daughters, even though I only remember meeting Kathy. Never the less, I wanted to convey my sympathy to you three girls and your families. I have many fond memories of associating with your Mom.
