Mary J. (Montemurro) Peterson, 90, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 31, 2011, at her home. Born in Kenosha on August 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah (Maccarone) Montemurro; she was the oldest of 5 children. A lifelong resident of Kenosha and graduate of Kenosha High School, she also attended the Kenosha College of Commerce. In 1942 she married John Peterson. He preceded her in death in the summer of 1962. They met while he was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base. Mary remained close to John’s siblings and their children throughout the years, attending Peterson Family events in Pennsylvania and welcoming them into her home in Kenosha. She had been employed by Golden Bell Dairy, her father’s business, until it was sold in 1960. She then worked in the banking industry at the former American State Bank and First Bank Southeast until her retirement at the age of 66. Mary was a member of the Italian American Ladies Society. Nicknamed “Hershey” early in her life, she was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, and several generations of their children throughout the United States. She was an avid reader, loved to cook, sew and knit. But she was happiest surrounded by her family at many different functions. Mary was the family photographer of her generation, traveling with family and friends whenever possible. She was a woman of strong faith throughout her life. Mary is survived by her sister, Thomasina Madrigrano of Las Vegas, NV; and a brother, Michael Montemurro of Kenosha. She is also survived by her in sisters-in-law, Eleanor Pavuk and Dorothy Sorick, both of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph in 1943; a sister, Eleanor (Roger) Gemignani; and a brother-in-law, Aldo Madrigrano. She was also preceded in death by her Pennsylvania in-laws, Charles and Eileen Peterson, Dan and Jane Peterson, Joe Pavuk, William Sorick and Louie and Mary Russ. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice Advantage, Dr. Angelina Montemurro, and Mary’s brother, Michael, her caretaker, for all of their kind and generous help during this difficult time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 12th, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Private interment will be held at St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church or Hospice Advantage would be appreciated by the family.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111-60th StreetKenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654-3533Visit Mary’s Online Memorial Book at:www.prokofuneralhome.com
