Zelda Chulew, 100, of Kenosha, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2010, at Lieberman Geriatric Health Center in Skokie, IL. To die is bitter, but to die without having ever lived is truly unbearable. Born in Dobromil, Poland, on March 15, 1910, our beloved Zelda Chulew (nee Treiber), a Holocaust survivor, lived her life in fear and hope...hope for peace, freedom and safety of her children and grandchildren. The only survivor of her family of fourteen, Zelda also endured having watched her husband of two years (Favel Kramer) die in her arms while escaping the Nazis. She knew the task of remembering what she and her son Marty went through was almost unbearable. Zelda often said "How does one bear witness to the unspeakable?”, so she just suffered in silence. Zelda was always making sure that people around her had enough to eat, because she understood what it felt like to starve. And above all, she was grateful for life in a country where she could be free and safe. Still, she dreaded the thought that the world may one day lose its memory. Loving Mother to Marty Kraemer, adored grandmother to Katya Kraemer Hirsh (Jason) and Vanessa Kraemer Seiler (Brent), and proud great-grandmother to Jeremy Hirsh, Rachel Hirsh, Ilyssa Hirsh, Shayna Seiler and Isabelle Seiler. Cherished step-mother to Manny Chulew, Bernard Chulew (Esther) and Edward Chulew. Zelda is preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Dr. Irene Kraemer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 20th, at Proko Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at B’Nai Zedek Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Gutkind/Kraemer scholarship fund at Carthage College would be greatly appreciated by the family.Proko Funeral Home & Crematory5111-60th StreetKenosha, WI 53144Phone: (262) 654-3533Visit Zelda’s Online Memorial Book at:www.prokofuneralhome.com
