Bernard R. "Bernie" Aker, 86, of Iola, WI, formerly of Kenosha, died Monday, July 27, 2009, at Iola Living Assistance in Iola. Bernie was born in Hampton, IA, on June 1, 1923, the son of the late Edward and Anna (Bergman) Aker. He attended Woodworth Grade School in Woodworth, WI, and Lincoln Grade School in Kenosha. He had formerly lived in Bristol, Somers and Kenosha for 40 years. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of the VFW. On October 16, 2004, he married Lettie O’Brien in Iola. Bernard retired as a foreman and molder from Arneson Foundry in Kenosha. He is survived by his wife, Lettie (O’Brien) Aker of Iola; children, Debra (Randy) Miller of Kenosha, Jeanne (Ron) Dalton of Madison, Sharon (Pete) Tucker of Iola, Cathy (Ron Colby) Jackson of Iola, and Lorrie Summers of Kenosha; a daughter-in-law, Dee Dee Summers of Kenosha; grandchildren, Tony Miller, Donna Barry, Debbie Beberniss, Darrie Dalton, Dan Dalton, James Bilski, Janet Langer, Jackie Cherek, Charlene Summers, Shawn Summers, Margo Reener and Bridget Hagopian; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Thelma; a daughter, Susan; a son, Chuck Summers; three sisters, Irene Perri, Laura Wade and Evelyn Schlagel; and three brothers, Harold, Clarence and Elmer Aker. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 4th, at Proko Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park.
