George Walter Sovitzky, 81, of Kenosha, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Hospice House in Pleasant Prairie. Born October 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Walter V. and Helen (Zielenski) Sovitzky. He moved to Kenosha in 1951. After graduating from Wauwatosa East High School, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps 103rd Air and Airways Communication System. Before coming to Kenosha, he worked for Capital Airlines in Washington D.C. A staff writer at the Kenosha News for 41 years, he was a founding member of Local 159 of The Newspaper Guild at the News. For nine years before his retirement in 1992, he wrote the popular column "Let George Do It." Surviving is a niece, Susan (Omar Urema) Proffitt of Chicago; a nephew, Dann (Amy) Proffitt of Williamsburg, VA; a great-niece, Kathrine Proffitt; and four cousins, Jean Newport and Mary (Anthony) Weiser, both of Kenosha, Robert Doban of Rancho Sante Fe, CA, and Peter (Ellen) Zielenski of New Braunfels, TX. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nina Proffitt, and a cousin, Richard Sovitzky. George’s family would like to thank the nurses, staff and volunteers at Hospice House for their care and compassion during his last 10 days. At his request, there will be no funeral services held. Memorials to Hospice Alliance would be appreciated by the family. George was a good friend when I needed one the most. I am a better person for having known him. I lost touch with him in recent years, but I will never forget him. He did have a fantastic life.
