Alfred John Niccolai
Alfred J. "Fritz" Niccolai, 89, of Kenosha, passed away Friday, April 3rd, 2009, at Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Kenosha. Born on November 2, 1919, in Kenosha, he was the 5th of 9 children. He was educated in local public schools and graduated from Kenosha Central High School in 1938. He drove for Union Dye until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1945 and was discharged in December 1946 from the Ground Forces Band. He married Jean M. Gehl on May 1, 1948. She preceded him in death on October 5, 1954. On January 6, 1962, he married Carol Lee Zaricor in Racine. She preceded him in death on August 1, 2007. He played French horn with the Charleston SC Symphony in 1947. He returned to Kenosha and worked as a furniture salesman. He entered real estate sales in 1965 until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Fritz loved music. He was an accomplished French horn player with the Boy Scout and CYO Bands in the 1930’s and 40’s, the 158th Armed Forces Band in 1947, and the Kenosha Symphony from the 1930’s until 1965. He also performed with the Waukegan and Racine Symphonies in the 1940’s and 50’s. Surviving are his four children, Barbara (Dan) Kexel and Jack (Mary) Niccolai, both of Kenosha, Joan (Stuart) Mensinger of Pleasanton, CA, and Cheryl (David) Springer of Castle Rock, CO; six grandchildren, Steve Kexel, Keith (Christina) Kexel, Max Mensinger, Ian Springer, Casey Mensinger, and Nathan Springer; two great-grandchildren, Michael Daniel Kexel and Matthew Joseph Kexel; and three sisters, Mary Wientjes, Elizabeth Niccolai, and Lillian Hartnell, all of Kenosha. He was preceded in death by a son, Alfred "Fred" Niccolai; four brothers, Albert, Frank, Peter, and Edward; and a sister, Marguerite Shearin. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 6th, from Proko Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. James Cemetery. My condolences to Al's family. Have known Al for many years as we worked together in the real estate business. Enjoyed his companionship both in business and personally. Al was one of a kind, very honest, never hesitated to state his opinion which was respected.
