Irene Portanova, 96, of Kenosha, passed away Friday, May 9th, 2008, at St. Joseph Home for the Aged with her daughter by her side. Born in Kenosha on January 5, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Mary (Cesari) Amici. She received her education in the schools of Kenosha and was a lifelong resident of Kenosha, except for a short period of time when she resided in New York. She married Peter Portanova in Long Beach, CA. He passed away in July of 1985. Before her marriage, she was a sewer at Simmons Co. She later worked at Reuter's Bakery (now Oliver's Bakery) and for years Irene was a supervisor for Heinemann Bakery in Milwaukee. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and enjoyed crocheting, knitting and all crafts. Surviving is her daughter, Jill Portanova of Kenosha. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mario and Ray Ameche; and four sisters, Anita Gregori, Amelia Herbach, Adeline Saylor and Celia Contoyanis. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 12th, at All Saints Mausoleum Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held on Monday at All Saints Chapel from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the services.
