Andrew R. BROOKHOUSE

1916 ∼ 2007

Andrew R. BROOKHOUSE
Andrew R. Brookhouse ("Andy"), a prominent attorney in Kenosha for more than 50 years, died on Friday, November 16th, 2007, at the age of 90. Andrew was born on December 9, 1916, in Winnipeg, Canada, the son of Fred and Grace Brookhouse. At the age of six he came to Kenosha where his Dutch father was employed as a painting contractor. At the early age of eight, Andrew helped his dad at the painting sites. After his father died at age 49, Andrew at age nine sold Liberty magazines at the old North Shore Station and then at the age of 12, became a Kenosha News paperboy. He continued to be a news carrier until the age of 19 at which time he enrolled at Carroll College in Waukesha, WI. Andrew said many times that his training as a news carrier under the guidance of Bill Schulte, then circulation manager, was the best training that he ever had. By the time he went to college he was servicing five different paper routes each day. Andy graduated from Bradford High School in 1935. In 1940, he graduated from Carroll College with a BA Degree and immediately joined the Air Force as a buck private. Ultimately, he was placed in charge of the entire aircraft division of Sheppard Field in Texas. After six years in the service, he was honorably discharged as a Lt. Colonel. Later, he attained the rank of Colonel in the Air Force Reserves. He entered Denver Law School and ultimately graduated from Marquette Law School in 1948. In 2000, he was honored by the Marquette University Law School for having completed 50 years as an active attorney. Early on, he practiced with William O. Kupfer. He retired as the senior partner of Brookhouse, Richardson and Parise, where he practiced with his son, Eugene for more than 30 years. He married his loving and devoted wife, Joyce, on January 25, 1965. Together they raised seven children and traveled throughout the world. His first priority was family. In his early years of legal practice he also worked nights at American Motors in Dept 813. During the period of his law practice he was actively engaged in community projects as a member of the board of directors of the Brown National Bank and Kenosha County Blood Bank. He was a member of the County School Commission and Kenosha Police and Fire Commission. He represented several labor unions in Kenosha and was a member of UAW-CIO. Andrew was an active member of the Senior Citizens computer class and was actively engaged as a Hospice volunteer. He was a water color artist, enjoyed fishing, raised hybrid roses and loved his vegetable garden. He was a member of the finance committee and building committee of Trinity Lutheran Church. He also taught at Carthage and Parkside University. Brookhouse is survived by his wife, Joyce E. Brookhouse. He is also survived by his sons, Eugene J. Brookhouse (Ellen), Frederick Brookhouse (Joanie), Robert Brookhouse (Sharon) of Santa Rosa, CA, James Leiting (Terry) and Steve Leiting (Wanda); and daughters, Lyndell Gil (Orlando) of New York, NY, and Shireen Arata (Brian) of Cloverdale, CA. He also leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Tina (Frank) Ventura of Chicago, Sara (Matt) Braun of Madison, WI, Bret Ehlert of Paris, France, Alex and Rosie Brookhouse of Santa Rosa, CA, James Leiting, Andrew Leiting, Steve Leiting all of Kenosha and Arianna and Orlando Gil of New York, NY; and his 90th birthday present, his dog, Lucy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Albertina (Firmani) Brookhouse in 1963, and his brother, Harry Brookhouse, and his sister, Grace Gums of Denver, CO. (In preparing the above obituary, Andy accurately showed his character the way he saw himself: a helpful, friendly, hard working man, trying to save a little money each year for that rainy day with the constant help of his devoted and loving wife.) Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 21st, at Proko Funeral Home at 10:30 am. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at Proko Funeral Home from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), P.O. Dear Joyce, Gene, and Family Members,It was with sadness for you--in your grief--that I learned of Andy's death, yet also with joy for him as he has moved into the nearer presence of the Lord. Paul Felber and I, as fellow "HAM" radio operators, often enjoyed conversations with Andy about radios and antennas, and spent some time with him in his "shack," consulting with him about the marvelous experience of radio operations. It has been many years since our last colloquium, but we will miss him, and will not forget.Sincerely,Lee Downs, KB9GZG

My condolences to Eugene and Ellen Brookhouse. I am sorry for your loss. I hope you find peace knowing that Andrew is in a better place and is walking with the Lord right now. I used to love the way that Andrew would come into the office and have me photocopy his drawings. I still have one that he gave me. Much love to you and all your family during this time.

I am soo sorry for your loss. Mr. Brookhouse used to garden at my parents farm and he also did the closing when they purchased it from Wally and Edie Kosman. What a wonderful man.

To Joyce, Gene & Ellen and all of Andy's family and friends....my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss, It was my privilege to get to know Andy thru the Brown Bank, and because his office was across the street from the bank for many years, I saw him often. I will remember always the sparkle in his eyes, and his quick smile, and his willingness to chat with anyone about almost any subject...he was a true gentleman, and I was better to have known him.The blessings he leaves you are each other, his friends and family...draw strength from each other and be thankkful for his full life.

Dear Joyce, Gene & Ellen, Steve & Wanda and all the family members I never had the opportunity to meet. No tribute to Andy would be complete without the "online" accolades Andy gave this community a lot over the years, he had a wonderfully productive life. He also had a vision of the future and he wanted to make sure he was a part of it. Andy knew the potential of modern technology and while most his age looked upon technology with disdain, Andy embraced it! He was the oldest member of our computer user group some twenty years ago and he was one of it's most avid members. Andy lived his life without fear, as if he were still in his twenties. We can all learn a lesson from the way Andy lived his life, fear nothing, embrace change and always smile. Andy - You are missed. Your friend, Chris.

Dearest Joyce and family, I write this with a heavy heart as I remember the special uncle and aunt I gained in my later years. You both were like fine silk thread weaving many of us together in an unusually beautiful fabric called your family. Your love is a treasure, and will live forever in Uncle Andy's memory, karin
