Russell H. Gates, 89, of Kenosha, passed away Thursday, May 17th, 2007, at United Hospital System-Kenosha Campus. Born July 13, 1917, in Platteville, WI, he was the son of the late John E. and Mary Ann (Wilkinson) Gates. He was educated in the schools of Lafayette County and moved to Kenosha in 1962. He was a decorated US Army veteran of World War II, entering the service on January 14, 1942, and was honorably discharged on October 13, 1945. He drove supplies to the front on Burma Road and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze battle stars, three Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe, and the Good Conduct Medal. On April 22, 1950, he married Ann Edwards in Rockford, IL. He worked for American Motors Corporation, retiring in the early 1980's. Russell had a love for fishing and racing down the Mississippi River in his son Gary's boat. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed playing the slots in Las Vegas. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ann of Kenosha; dear father of Debra (Greg) Filut of New Berlin, WI, Gary Gates of Kenosha, and Donna Kelley of Kenosha; loving grandfather of Erik, Tonya, Robert and Brendan; and great-grandfather of Alyssa. He is further survived by his brother Gene Gates of Jenkynsville, WI. Preceding him in death were four brothers, John, Robert, Edmund and Lyle. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 22nd, at Proko Funeral Home at 4:00 pm, followed with full military honors.
