George Thomas POREDEN
George T. Poreden, 95, of Kenosha, died Monday, July 17th, 2006, at Kenosha Medical Center. Born July 26, 1910, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Prejec) Poreden. He moved to Kenosha with his parents in early childhood, attending local schools, graduating from Kenosha High School and becoming a lifelong resident of Kenosha. Mr. Poreden graduated from Notre Dame University with a degree in chemical engineering. He was a member of the Notre Dame Monogram Club and is listed in the Notre Dame Sports Hall of Fame. On July 3, 1981, he married Elinor Wavro at St. Marks Catholic Church in Kenosha. She preceded him in death on December 25, 2003. He joined the Kenosha Labor paper as a sports writer after graduating from Notre Dame, later becoming editor, and then publisher and editor of the Kenosha Labor when Harold Newton retired as publisher. He retired from the paper in 1971. During World War II he also worked the night shift at the American Brass Company. He was very active in union activities and was a member of the Kenosha Trades and Labor Council. The Kenosha Labor paper won many awards for its reporting during this period and he entertained many foreign visitors interested in labor papers. During his retirement he attended Gateway Technical College and received an associate's degree in fluid power and another in electricity. He studied Spanish, wrote books, invented fiber glass products, and traveled the United States and Mexico. His greatest interest was reading. Ideas - here, now and future, were the important things in his life. He was a member of St. Marks Catholic Church. Surviving are his son, George Harold (Pat) Poreden of Chetek, WI; two daughters, Patricia Ann (Jim) Kohn of Shawno, WI, and Rosemary (Gene) Bloedorn of Tuscan, AZ; stepdaughters, Gloria (Elmer) Ungemach of Chatfield, MN, Sue (Jack) Anstett, Menomonee Falls, WI, and Mary Ann (Lee) Slorp, Lynwood, WA; and stepsons, John (Judy) Wavro of Kenosha, Mark (Penny) Wavro of Kenosha, Thomas (Mariann) Wavro of Jenkin Town, PA, and Richard (Jill) Wavro, Mishawaka, IN; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Irene Pofahl; his second wife, Regina Gostow; and by his stepson, Lennard H. Berg.
