Grace Marie CERQUA
Grace M. Cerqua, 80, of Kenosha, passed away Sunday, April 23rd, 2006, at Brookside Care Center. Born September 24, 1925, in Beloit, she was the daughter of the late John and Marie (LeMoine) Johansen. She graduated from Beloit High School and the Janesville School of Nursing. On September 21, 1946, she married Wilbert J. "Bill" Belongia. They later divorced but remained close friends later in life. She then married Thomas Cerqua in 1965 and they later divorced. She worked as a charge nurse at Kenosha Memorial Hospital for many years and then as a private duty nurse for several more years before retiring in the mid 1960s. She also worked as secretary for Proko Funeral Home for nine years and as manager for the Fairview Apartment Complex for 14 years in Kenosha. Grace was very active and instrumental in the Frank Elementary PTA, Stamp Program and Health Education Programs, as well as Brownie Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and Boy Scout Den Mother. She also organized and ran the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon in Kenosha every Labor Day for 13 years. She was also a past member of the Women of the Moose, Lioness Club, Italian American Ladies Auxiliary, and Kenosha Policeman's Ladies Auxiliary. Grace put everything she had into whatever task was at hand. She was the first one to step forward and the last one to step back. She was known for her leadership capabilities and qualities, and hosted many fundraisers and dinner parties that were second to none. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn M. (Joseph J.) Kiser of Kenosha; her son, William F. (Tracey Cousins) Belongia of Wausau, WI; four grandchildren, Jeffrey W. Techert and Kelly (John) Mauser, both of Kenosha, Daniel A. (Jill) Belongia of Normal, IL, and Thomas R. Belongia of Minnesota; and two great-grandchildren, Emily and John Mauser. She is also survived by two sisters, Vera (Arthur) Oribiletti of Racine, WI, and Jean (Leonard) Spielvogel of Florida, as well as many nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by her former husband, Wilbert J. "Bill" Belongia on December 7, 1984, and a daughter, Christine Marie in infancy. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 26th, at the Proko Funeral Home at 6:00 pm. Visitation will be held on Wednesday at the Proko Funeral Home from 4:00 pm until the time of the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family would be deeply appreciated.
