Charles I. Vassar, Sr., 80, of Kenosha, passed away Thursday, September 29th, 2005, at Kenosha Medical Center. Born in Iron River, MI, on December 7, 1924, he was the son of the late William and Ruby (Linden) Vassar. He was educated in the schools of Michigan, coming to Kenosha as a young adult. On March 9, 1943 he entered the United States Army, serving during World War II, and was honorably discharged on November 28, 1945. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars and 4 Overseas Service Bars and the Good Conduct Medal. He then reentered the Army serving in Korea during the Korean War as Staff Sgt. from December 6, 1950, until his honorable discharge on December 7, 1953. He received the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On November 5, 1955, in Kenosha, he married Agnes Schultz. She passed away April 2, 1990. He was a member of UAW Local #72, VFW Junker Ball Post #1865, and the Ke-Nash-A Club. He loved playing Cribbage, carpentry/remodeling and traveling up North. He loved all crafts, especially making Latch Hook Rugs of the American Flag. Some of his rugs are proudly hung in the Kenosha Mayor's office, Dr. Steven V. Slana and Dr. Rod Mata's offices, and the VFW. He is survived by three children, Vicky (Jerry) Malzahn of Kenosha, Brenda Griffith of Racine, and Charles G. Vassar of Kenosha; a son-in-law, William Hoaglund of Kenosha; his former son-in-law, Louis Griffith of Racine; two sisters, Lucille Johnivin of Michigan and Ruth Hamblin of Mississippi; six grandchildren, Tonya Vassar, Ondrea Hoaglund, Cassie Vassar, Chelsey Vassar, Nathan Griffith, Zachary Griffith; and a great-grandson, Logan Zahringer. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Doreen Hoaglund on June 30, 1990; and his brothers and sisters, Minnie, Noble, Foster, Lester, Katherine, Viola, Benny, Eleanor, Geraldine, Larita, Ladine and Shirley. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 3rd, at 1:30 pm at Proko Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park.
