Florence J. NIHLSON

Florence Jankus Nihlson, 88, of Kenosha, died Wednesday (October 6th, 2004) at Kenosha Medical Center. Born in Chicago on Dec. 19, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Anna (Banza) Jankus. She came to Kenosha as a young girl and graduated from Kenosha High School. She attended Northwestern University for two years and was ranked first in her freshman class. She went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in English. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was employed by Lakeside Steel and Manufacturing from 1967 until 1993 when she retired. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a volunteer for the Kenosha Area Family and Aging Services and the Department of Aging. She received many awards, including Kenosha's Outstanding Older American, Family and Aging Volunteer of the Year and Citizen of the Week with Paul Kern on WLIP Radio. She enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles. Survivors include two daughters, Jeannette (Dennis) Kehoe of Kenosha and Bernadette (Richard) Poetker of Racine; a brother, Allan (Isabel) Jankus of Kenosha; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Proko Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.NIHLSON: Funeral services for Florence Jankus Nihlson will be held on Monday, October 11th, at Trinity Lutheran Church at 10:00 AM.
