Howard Doherty, 90, of Kenosha, died Sunday (October 3rd, 2004) at Washington Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 13, 1914, in Negaunee, MI, he was the son of the late Arthur and Albena (Rasmussen) Doherty. He came to Kenosha as a child and was educated in local schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from April 4, 1942, until his honorable discharge Sept. 14, 1945. On June 16, 1951, he married Viola Pascucci at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. In 1930, he started the Howard Doherty Band while working at American Brass. He directed a drum and bugle corps and entertained the armed forces while he was in the Army. He worked in a traveling vaudeville act after the war. He was a barber steward on the Great Northern Railroad, and later worked at G. LeBlanc Corp. He then operated Howard's Barbershop and worked at American Motors Corp. He worked as barber until his retirement at age 75. He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a former member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of musicians union Local 59 in Waukegan. He was also a member of the American Legion, a railroad union, the Machinists union, Disabled American Veterans, and UAW Local 72. He enjoyed dancing and entertaining people, playing piano, drums and xylophone. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Sherry (Frank) Duran of San Joe, CA, Janice (Jerry) Cross of Kenosha, Barbara Knudtson of Lake Zurich, IL, and Karen (Mark) Erdmann of Lake Mills; two sisters, Henrietta Fritz of Racine and Betty Jane (Jim) Landreth of Kenosha; 11 grandchildren, Jeremy and Matthew Cross, Aaron, Nicolas and Sergio Duran, Jamie, Stephanie and Emily Erdmann, and Mary, Angela and David Knudtson; and also several nieces and nephews. Proko Funeral Home and crematory is in charge of arrangements.DOHERTY: A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Howard Doherty will be held on Wednesday, October 6th, at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 12:00 Noon. Interment to follow at St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass at Holy Rosary Church.
