A Life Remembered
Obituary
Don Timothy Sandberg, 78, of Kenosha, WI, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Hospice Alliance Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 8, 1948, in Kenosha, WI, he was the son of the late Edward and Antoinette (Jonik) Sandberg.
Don served in the United States Army as a paratrooper from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1970.
He met his high school sweetheart, Darlene Jaffe, in band class at St. Joseph High School. They were married at St. Mark’s church on September 9, 1967, and they celebrated their 50th anniversary with an Alaskan Cruise. She preceded him in death on December 27, 2017.
In 1969, Darlene and Don welcomed their firstborn, a daughter, Michele Lyn. Three years later, they welcomed a son, Scott Lloyd. They also played a crucial role in raising their niece, Sarah (Jaffe) Sukus. Darlene and Don were loving grandparents who were deeply involved in each of their three grandchildren’s lives, offering them endless love, support, and cherished memories.
Don attended St. James School and St. Joseph High School and graduated with a degree in Marketing Materials Management from Gateway Technical Institute. He worked for Kenosha County for many years before retiring in 2010.
Don was a devoted Cubs fan and enjoyed fishing with his son Scott and his grandchildren, working in his yard, and buying donuts for his grandchildren, who knew him as “Grandpa Donut.” He was also known as “Eagle Man,” serving as the mascot for his grandson Zach’s CYC football team, the CYC Eagles.
Don is survived by his children, Michele (Ted Jr.) Gianakos and Scott (Michelle) Sandberg; his grandchildren, Zachary and Jenna Gianakos and Olivia Sandberg; his sister, Donna (Tim) Besch; his brother, Doug (Kathy) Sandberg; his brother-in-law, Michael Jaffe; and Bill O’Keefe, a beloved cousin-in-law whose support and kindness meant so much to the family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Dann, Dale, and Dave Sandberg.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Hospice Alliance Hospice House for the compassion, comfort, and support they provided to Don and his family during his final days.
